The New York Yankees are world champions. Great. They were the best team in baseball for the 2009 season, and they closed the deal last night in the Bronx.
Good for them. Baseball is better when the Yankees matter. Just like it is good for all of college football when Notre Dame is good; love them or hate them, the Yankees make for great theater. The NBA needs the Lakers and Celtics, the NFL need the Cowboys and MLB needs the Yankees.
I am OK with all of this.
But what I can’t deal with, what makes me want to throw up, is the idea that somehow the Yankees were a gritty, gutty group of guys who overcame great obstacles to win their 27th world title.
Yeah, how they were able to fight through a rotation that had CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte, and AJ Burnett is a miracle. How they were able to close games with nothing short of the greatest relief pitcher of all time was inspiring. If not for the courageous performances of their Hall of Fame shortstop, their roid using Hall of Fame third baseman, and their $20 million dollar, league leading RBI and home run man at first base, who knows what would have happened.
That would be hilarious if it weren’t so insulting. The Yankees might not be able to flat out buy a title, but with the amount of money they have to spend they can cover a hell of a lot of mistakes.
They didn’t overcome anything other than an enormous tax burden. They have the best player available at nearly every position on the field. What they don’t have, they buy; and if that guy doesn’t work, they buy another one.
They deserve to be champs; they earned it, they are a great baseball team. But gritty? Please. No one who makes money like that is gritty.
Ever.
You got it right, I completely agree. Great site by the way, keep up the good work! Go Gauchos

The website is great, has very interesting topics. As far as the Yankees go, I completely agree. They are a team with a pay roll that should win the World Series every year. Its like legos, they can construct their roster any way that they like. Lets see here, they have Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, along with Derek Jeter, not to mention the best closer in major league baseball Mariano Rivera. This combination is great to watch but at the same time is like watching an all star team in action, and anything less than winning is unacceptable.

You stinkin' kiddin' me. How can it be called a sport when the Pittsburgh Pirates get to spend 30ish million and the Yanks cruise in a 208! Hope Springs eternal except at Spring Training if your not the Yanks, Red Sox, Dodgers or Phillies. Go Royals 2010!

I completely agree. They need to at least admit that they are who they are and that is not gonna change. I also feel like the fight or the struggle leads to good baseball. Yes the Yankees are the best of the best and that is a cool thing to witness, but it was almost boring....I am also a Dodgers fan so maybe that has something to do with it.....

This is true across all sports, and all levels. Just look at UCSB if we had money what athlete wouldn't want to spend four years at beautiful UCSB pursuing D1 All-American honors. Its arms race in colleges as well in the big leagues, it all boils down to the bottom line who has the resources to attract the best. In the case you point out thy Yankees can buy them all and others can only buy one... (ie the Giants prized Timmy) but if you want to be world champs it usually comes down to who has the full all-star roster and that costs the big bucks.
Great article and website! keep pursuing your dreams you give guidance and hope to us all still in college.

I totally agree with you. I am a huge Yankee fan and my friends are constantly on my case about how the Yankees "just buy what they need" and how that is so unfair. Well, if a corporation is going to be run well enough that a team like the Yankees can afford all of these top-notch players, then I think it is perfectly fair! And you are right, they "couldn't buy the title," they still had to very work hard to win those games to become world champions!
Love your site! Thanks for sharing! Go Gauchos!!!!

Too much money to get gritty or be be gritty, but a cool, calm and professional performance. A great performance at 'crunch time' by an amazing collecton of ballplayers...some of whom actually like working together, ot seems.

I agree with you on this point. No way they can be gritty when they are basically buying titles just because they are in that market and can get that revenue. Great site you have going. Keep it up.

Sorry my english, but this is great site, I wil add to my favorites.
It’s good to see this information in your post, i was looking the same but there was not any proper resource, thanx now i have the link which i was looking for my research.
First of all - I hope it does cause MLB some major angst. Their role in all of this is significant. Selig should be forced to step down. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE knew what was going on. And rather than confront it Selig and his merry band of synchophants decided to ignore it. Ignore it as Bonds heads swelled to gargantuan proportions. Clemons is a major league tool and frankly deserves what he's about to get......
this was a very entertaining read. i enjoyed it very much!
hey there, this might be little offtopic, but i am hosting my site on hostgator and they will suspend my hosting in 4days, so i would like to ask you which hosting do you use or recommend?
