Yes, Jerry Jones likes to hear himself talk.
Yes, Jerry Jones has an ego that is slightly larger than his $1.2 Bbbbbbbbillion dollar monument to himself, Cowboys Stadium,
Yes, he looks like the Joker, only with a more jacked up face lift.
Yes, Jerry Jones is a shameless blowhard who says things he shouldn’t and might like to have a drink or seven too many.
But that doesn’t mean that what those dirtbags did to him in that bar was OK. It wasn’t.
Jones may have run his scotch-filled mouth too freely, he may have crushed Bill Parcells and his holiness, Tim Tebow, but what he was also doing was being a halfway decent and normal guy, something that doesn’t happen with the owners of professional sports teams.
What was embarrasing about what he said? That Tim Tebow isn't worth a third round pick? He's not. That he brought in Parcells expressly intending to get a stadium built? That's not embarrassing, that's a lesson on how business gets done in the modern NFL.
Jones was out, having some drinks, talking about his team and some dirtball rolls tape and goes looking for Deadspin so he can make Jones look like an ass. Jerry doesn’t need help to embarass himself, he does fine all on his own.
See if you can find another owner in the NFL, the NBA or MLB that you can stroll up to in a bar and start firing him sports questions. There isn’t one. If you were 19, female, and new to this country, then maybe you could get near Jerry Buss, but that’s your only other option. Jones was being a decent guy, talking ball and these guys burned him.
He was providing the kind of access these goofy dorks will never see again.
No wonder these guys never want to mingle with the ‘common man’. They have nothing to gain and a lot to lose. They don’t know when one of these guys might record them and then post it on line making them look like a jerk. Even if you are lucky enough to get near one of these guys, they sure as hell aren’t going to tell you what they really think; Jerry Jones and his .24 BAC excluded.
Maybe Jerry should be more careful, but what about everyone else? What is there to be gained by putting a public figure on the internet in an unflattering light? Nobody knows your name now. The only billionaire you're ever going to meet certainly isn't going to want share a beer anytime soon. All you are is a sycophant that wants to bring down someone more successful than yourself. Congratulations, you (almost) succeeded. Now what?
The next time an owner or a player, or anyone else that you might be interested in hearing what they have to say, blows you off or says nothing at all, remember these tools in Dallas who screwed Jerry Jones. You have them to thank.
Exactly. About 12 years ago I had the opportunity to chat with Jerry Jones at an event in Dallas. The guy was top notch, friendly, and incredibly accessible. You nailed it. What a bunch of tools.
