Joe Torre Tries To Kill Broxton in Loss #MLB
Bad news Dodger fans, your team is, at best, average. At best. They lose to good teams. They lose to the Angels. They lose to the Red Sox. They lose to the Yankees. They have inferior players (mostly in the pen and rotation) and vastly inferior ownership. And last night, they had an inferior manager. Joe Torre used 400-pound, Jonathan Broxton for the fourth time in the last five games (and had him warming up in the other), who promptly went out, gave up four runs to tie the game, and looked like he was on the verge of cardiac arrest in the process. Broxton had a career high 48 pitches, not Krispy Kremes, in the ninth and who knows how much that took out of the guy for the next week, month, season?

Broxton is a horse, but he is a fat horse. He’s overweight, and looked like he needed an oxygen tank before he threw his first pitch. Too much work for the guy. You don’t bring in your closer with a four run lead, especially if he has been working like a dog for the previous week. Torre tanked that one. And I have no clue why you leave him in for a 48 pitch beating like that. After four hitters, it was clear he wasn’t sharp, he wasn’t the guy, go get him. When you can’t finish off a guy who has a grand total of a week in Major League Baseball, Colin Curtis, you need to be back in the clubhouse icing the arm and thinking about the next one; not left out there to implode in front of a national audience.
Torre has very little to work with in terms of bullpen depth but your closer can’t have the most innings pitched of anyone in the pen, and he does. FACT. George Sherrill, who leads the team in stupid goatees and pant size, finished the debacle by allowing a two-run homer to Robinson Cano in the 10th. But hey, that long goatee sure looks intimidating, 6.75 ERA aside.
The Dodgers are five back to the Padres; a team with a far better pitching staff. Frank McCourt is too busy hiring psychics and divorcing his equally repugnant wife to care what is happening to his team and spend what is necessary to compete.
Joe Torre abuses the guys he likes. Always has, always will. But you can’t have your closer pitch every night and throw nearly 50 pitches in the process. Broxton may have taken a beating, and Sherrill may have given up a gopher ball, but Joe Torre gets that loss last night.
Or at least he should.
